How to Size a UPS for Your Server Room
Running servers without a UPS is risky in Tanzania. Here is a simple way to calculate the UPS capacity you need for your rack.
Power cuts are a reality in Tanzania, and a sudden shutdown can corrupt data, damage hardware, and take your business offline. A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) gives you time to shut down gracefully — or keep running through short outages.
The APC Smart-UPS SRT 3000VA is our most popular unit for small server rooms. It supports around 2.7kW of load, which covers a typical 2–3 server rack with a switch and firewall. At TZS 3,500,000 it includes pure sine wave output — important for sensitive server PSUs.
To size your UPS, add up the wattage of everything you want protected. A Dell PowerEdge R750 draws around 750W under load. Add your switch (100W), firewall (50W), and monitor (50W) — you are at roughly 950W. Choose a UPS rated at least 20% above that total.
